I’m Back!!!

June 16, 2008 at 10:51 am (Uncategorized)

Last night we came back. Happy is an understatement of how I feel, now that I’m here. This morning, it was so great to wake up in my bed, go downstairs to my living room, drink my coffee, see my yard, etc. It all kind of seems like a dream now, a small interruption in my otherwise placid and even-paced life. Now my life can return to normal, as can everybody else’s.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety-Jig

If you don’t like Mother Goose, then I don’t know what you’re doing here, ’cause there’s a lot of that sort of stuff. I don’t have much time, but I’m just writing to say that this is my last post ’til Monday. Sweet pictures coming soon! (but don’t get too excited, it’s going to be a few days)

Mi Abuelito

May 27, 2008 at 9:09 pm (Uncategorized)

A couple of days ago, my family was told that my great-uncle Will has cancer, and is going to receive hospice. He is 87 years old, so it’s not like he’s dying young, but he is so precious in our family that saying good-bye to him is very hard. My mother has many memories of camping and exploring the desert with her family and Uncle Will, along with his wife, Martha. He and my Grandpa grew up on a farm together in Ohio during the 1920’s and 30’s. I will be posting pictures of Uncle Wilmer as I get them scanned. Please pray for him, Aunt Martha, and their children. Thank you all so much.

Mi Abuelito (My Grandfather)

by Fernando Ortega

The moon is shining on the Pecos Mountains
Like a blue and silver dream,
And far away below the moonlit mountains
You are standing in your field.

You are an old man,
The earth is in your voice,
And in the songs that spill from your memory.
A hoe in your old hand,

Black water in the furrowed rows,
You sing our lives as they used to be,
Mi abuelito.

Tomorrow morning we will carry you
Beyond the village to a stony hill,
And rest you there beside your brightest blanket,
Leaves and diamonds that you wove last year.

Then, with our song
We will call for the summer stars
To fill the sky like a silver dream.
How we will sing
As we hold to the memory of your earthen voice on the moonlit field,

“Mi abuelito – cantaremos de ti
En el cielo – cantaremos de ti
Cantando – cantaremos de ti
Entre la luna y las entrellas!”
